CHAPTER 13

“What do you mean you lost her?” Wynn opened his maw, and advanced on Orin. The lad’s eyes widened as he peered at a mouthful of fangs. He dropped his satchel of supplies, and raised both hands.

“I had no idea she stopped following me. She never cried out. I believe she left of her own accord.”

“What makes you say that?”

“Some things she said had sounded strange.”

Wynn closed his mouth, stomping around in a circle. The snow crunched beneath his talons, and his tail whipped against a nearby tree, and shattered the trunk. When snow from overhead branches pummeled him, Orin didn’t move. He only followed Wynn with his eyes.

“Wynn...Smoke…please believe me when I say I have no idea where she went. Can you not use that big nose of yours to pick up her scent?”

Wynn roared again. Within moments, he forced his fear and anger to abate. The lad was not the guilty party, here. Kera had left, either of her own accord, or because someone or something had taken her. The former worried him more than a possible abduction. Hadn’t she acted like a prisoner? She had refused to answer questions about her homeland, or her pack. Her pack mate acted the same way. Vika told Evan, who told him, that little Maeve had run home in fear.

“Where can she have gone? The heavy snow has stopped, but it will have covered tracks and buried any scents. Why would she leave me?” Hopelessness made his voice crack, and the pain of the loss of her presence rippled along his scales.

“Please, dragon, we must get these supplies back to the others. Vika needs them,” Orin whispered.

The lad was correct. If anything happened to Vika or her unborn babe because they tarried here, the future of their dragon clan was in peril. With no female dragons, at least none they had seen for some time, Evan had decided they would have to search for another species with which to propagate. Vika’s babe’s birth would prove whether he was successful mating with a human. If not, it would be up to Wynn or Dougal to try.

An image of Kera, round with his offspring, was a shock to his system, more than discovering that she had run away. Had she shed her clothes, shifted into a wolf, and run home to her pack? Since she never told him where her people lived, how could he ever find her?

Why did his chest hurt? His body and his brain tangled with the truth. He’d angered her, in some way, and she’d decided she wanted no part of him. Could he have asked her to stay? Should he have? After their night together, he’d followed his instincts and had treated her as a plaything. He assumed, wrongly, a shifter would understand. He was a dragon, not a human, and certainly not a wolf. She would never want a future with the likes of him. Was that why she ran away in a rage?

Wynn waited as Orin climbed on his back and they headed to the cave.
